Deputy Minister Iva Petrova: Bulgaria will assist Moldova in energy security and diversification

Bulgaria will continue its efforts to assist Moldova in ensuring energy security and diversification of its energy sources, including in the field of natural gas and electricity. That is what Deputy Energy Minister Iva Petrova, who participated in the ninth meeting of the Intergovernmental Bulgarian-Moldovan Economic Cooperation Commission, said. The meeting took place on 26 March 2024 in the Moldovan capital, Chișinău, under the chair of Bulgarian Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry Irina Shtonova and Moldovan Minister of Energy Victor Parlicov.

During the event, Iva Petrova and Victor Parlicov held a bilateral meeting and discussed issues of common interest in the field of energy. Bulgaria and Moldova have confirmed their intentions to develop the Vertical Gas Corridor initiative. The accession of Moldova's gas transmission operator to the other project countries is key to the success of the initiative and opens up new opportunities for synergies with the European priorities for secure and reliable gas supply.

The Vertical Gas Corridor project is a common initiative of the gas transmission operators of Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Ukraine and Moldova aimed at diversifying and improving security of supply by transferring additional quantities of natural gas from south to north.

During the meeting of the Intergovernmental Bulgarian-Moldovan Economic Cooperation Commission, both sides also agreed to consider cooperation in the areas of energy efficiency, the development of electricity grids and their modernization and digitalization, renewable energy sources and energy storage.
