Bulgaria and North Macedonia wish to expand their cooperation in energy connectivity
Possibilities for further expanding energy co-operation between Bulgaria and North Macedonia were a key topic in the discussion of the Ambassador of North Macedonia to Bulgaria Agneza Rusi Popovska and Energy Minister Rumen Radev. Deputy Minister Iva Petrova, the Head of the Cabinet Ms. Karina Angelieva, as well as experts from the International Directorate attended the meeting held at the Ministry of Energy.
The Ambassador of North Macedonia expressed hope to continue co-operation on common energy projects and expressed her country’s interest in purchasing capacity in the underground gas storage facility Chiren, in acquiring shares in the LNG terminal in Alexandroupolis, and developing the second interconnector project between Bulgaria and North Macedonia. H.E. Agneza Rusi Popovska added that North Macedonia would also rely on support from Bulgaria as regards the alignment of its national legislation with the European Union law.
Minister Radev commented that in terms of energy connectivity, the capacity of the existing gas interconnector has already been increased by 500,000 cubic metres and stressed that electricity connectivity is also of the essence. The Energy Minister underlined other important aspects of the cooperation between the two countries, including synchronization of the operation of stock exchanges.
Both sides place focus on energy transition and renewables development, where the potential for cooperation and investment is significant.
